TSMFL is passionate about education and believes that education is critical to any kind of development.
The implementation of chess as an educational intervention creatively links math, science and life skill concepts in a fun and exciting manner for the child. Chess builds character and team spirit; it unlocks the cognitive potential of the child, it introduces a child to essential life skills and the basics of strategic planning for life, career and business – yet, it does not need specialised facilities. Chess is inexpensive, and within the reach of children from all walks of life.
The Supreme Chess Trust (IT 3705/09) trading as Tsogo Sun Moves for Life is an initiative that uses chess as a tool for education, which helps improve maths, science and problem-solving in children.
Tsogo Sun Moves for Life (TSMFL) introduced its MasterMoves chess programme by using chess as an educational tool, to focus exclusively on the Foundation Phase. The programme teaches learners mathematical skills, science and life orientation skills and also enhances Language Development (Gr. RR – 3).
TSMFL believes that the key to unlocking the cognitive potential of children is through structured implementation of chess education in-class from Gr. RR-7, where chess principles are intentionally linked to mathematics, science, language and life skills.
We have since partnered with academic institutions that continually conduct a research in terms of how this educational tool impacts on the improvement of the learners’ academic performance. The evidence is becoming so visible that learners who are participating in our MasterMoves Kids Programme show improvement in their mathematical as well as self-confidence, better communication and risk-taking (positive written feedback from schools currently participating in the programme).
TSMFL is excited to collaborate with TechSavvy Kids and JCSE (Wits) to open the coding world via chess to South Africa’s children.
